Earth Hour started as a lights-off event in Australia in 2007 and, with the movement now led by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), has spread to more than 7000 cities around the world.
Tonight at 8:30 pm local time, people, businesses, and cities and around the world - including glittery Las Vegas and NYC's Times Square - will shut off all non-essential lights for one hour and commit to reducing their environmental impact. Sure, it's a small step, but together these steps add up. The event is intended to create a symbolic moment, and encourage everyone to continue energy-saving actions beyond Earth Hour.
At Green Rainbow Revolution, the office will be dark and powered down. We'll be home with our families looking to have some old school, self-powered fun.
Fun Stuff To Do In The Dark
Cozy Time by Firelight: Indoors or out, by campfire or candle, there's nothing like sharing some good conversation (or scary ghost stories) to bring people together.
Hand Shadows: Grab a candle or hand-cranked flashlight and see who can make the most impressive shadow creatures.
Stargaze: Get outside and see the night sky. Particularly for those of us whole live with light pollution, take advantage of this time to see nature's lights.
Art in the Dark: Blind people do amazing things all the time. Do you ever wonder how? Grab some pencils or paint and let your hands be your eyes. You may be pleasantly surprised by what you create.
Move to the Music: Unplug, unwind, and let the rhythm move you. Play an instrument, sing a song. Just wiggle around and have fun!
So What will you do in the dark? We hope you'll join with us to take the pledge and let your friends know about Earth Hour. Share #EarthHour tonight!
